Dyslexia Diagnosis

The Diagnostics and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) defines dyslexia as a specific learning disorder characterised by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. Learning difficulties which are a result of a dyslexia diagnosis are usually detected during the pre-school years. However, some signs of dyslexia can be detected in children as young as 3-years-old. Early signs of dyslexia include speech delay, difficulty with phonological processing, difficulty with spelling, and struggling to read coherently according to their age-appropriate reading level.

The process of diagnosing dyslexia is typically carried out by medical practitioners and educational psychologists. Dealing with a dyslexia diagnosis may be daunting as there is presently no cure for it. However, there are effective strategies and support systems that are available to help your child with their learning difficulties. Without effective measures in place, your child may face difficulties keeping up with their peers, potentially leading to grade retention. Dyslexia can have a significant impact on child’s self-esteem which can potentially result in avoidance behaviours such as avoiding reading aloud or participating in activities that require reading or writing skills.

It’s important to note that the severity of dyslexia differs from person to person, and early intervention and specialided support can significantly help in overcoming these impediments, allowing individuals to thrive academically and personally. Research suggests that providing targeted support as soon as possible can significantly improve a child’s reading and writing abilities. Medical practitioners have outlined various recommendations for supporting children with dyslexia, including speech therapy and an individualised education plan. A specialised education programme can assist the child in acquiring the required skills to minimise challenges that affect their learning.
